Modeling. In a time where there is mixed feelings on the “right” way to do it- we decided to give you some tips on how to become the best model you can. Whether you are modeling for agency or just breaking into the industry- you want to constantly strive to improve your skill and growth mindset to achieve the most confident shots possible.

1. Know your Market Strengths

Target yourself- not your agency. Don’t be trying to make yourself match them, try to find an agency that matches you. In other words, know your height, weight, and size- and use that to find an agency wanting exactly that. Adjusting your physical features to “fit” with an agency you want to join- won’t help you as a model only make you want something that puts your time and energy in the wrong place. Also knowing your market will help you know what look the agencies around you are looking for. Living in a suburban area, agencies aren’t looking for an ulta-overdone look with overstated hair or makeup like bigger cities are. The more natural look is actually preferred in suburban areas, while more trendy, sleek looks are wanted in the city. Don’t feel that “pretty” means overdone- it comes from your personal market features. With trial and error, you will find an agency that you are right for- and is right for you.

2. Sign with an agency that you want to stand for.

This is one of the best gifts you could give to yourself as a model is to find an agency that is worthy of you. A good agency should understand your personal needs as a model, bring you up, and never take anything away from you. They should also never ask you to put yourself in an uncomfortable or compromising situation. It is definitely not necessary to sign with an agency- however through an agency you’ll be able to advertise yourself and grow further into the beneficial aspect of the industry.

3. Set your Boundaries.

Know that many agencies and photographers will see that the point of having a model is to get the “right” photo. Many times they will put this above anything else- so you have to advocate for yourself. Don’t let them force you into doing anything you are uncomfortable with- especially if you are told this will get you to the “top”, as it’s something that you will likely regret later. Be careful getting involved with the “wrong” agency, but don’t let the fear of that get in the way of your energy.

4. Get a good Headshot.

A headshot is the first impression that you give to an agency. Redefine “pretty” with “raw”- as tempting as it can be to photoshop and make you look attractive, that is not going to get you the shoot. Agencies want to see your features to see how many varieties of shots and looks they can create.

5. Choose a type of modeling.

This is a very important step in starting your career- if you have a vision of what you want to model, research and explore the different types of modeling.

  1. Fitness Model: A fitness model displays a fit, toned physique and a healthy lifestyle.

  2. Glamour Model: Bikini, boudoir, and lingerie

  3. Alt Model: tattoos, piercings, radical hair, and wardrobes

  4. Plus Model: models of all shapes and further size diversity

  5. Runway Model: strict regulations regarding height, weight, and measurements, these models travel

  6. Commercial Models: interact with the camera and create diverse poses

6. Build your Modeling Portfolio

Your portfolio, ideally, should be captured by a professional photographer. A portfolio consists of your best 8 to 12 shots that you should bring to all in-person casting calls, and you should present it to your agent with a catalogue of any modeling experience. Standards for portfolios have evolved a lot over recent years and you want to make sure your portfolio is professional and polished. Traditionally, you carry around a hard copy and a soft copy (digitally) that way you can showcase your best work filled with your knowledge and versatility. Also another great way to show your work is to blog. You can check out a post we did on that here. A lot of influencers and models we all know and love started as bloggers and Instagram personalities. Blogging creates quality content for your digital portfolio and allows you to work on projects at the same time. Keep your portfolio fresh and updated with your newest work as you gain experience.

7. Go-Sees

Interviews for models are called go-sees, and are either open to the public or arranged by an agency. You’ll need to bring your call/comp card with your clothing and shoe size, measurements, and contact information listed. You will be modeling for casting agents, in the relevant form to what you are modeling for (ie. walking, running, standing, sitting). Go-sees are usually hectic and they rarely run on time. Make sure, however, you are prepared and bring something to write down any important information. Be professional and polite.

8. Take care of yourself.

Whatever you do- changing your measurements is not your answer. It may seem that most agencies are looking for blonde 5’4’ women, but there always will be an agency looking for you for more than your height and weight. Nearly 40% of models suffer from anorexia- so those who remember what they are worth become successful in the industry. Only the wrong type of agencies will put you down over your measurements.

And most of all- remember you’re beautiful. Modeling is not about what you look like- it’s about how you feel. It’s the confidence you show in your shoots that show, don’t ever forget that!
